HMS Orlando

HMS OrlandoMessrs Palmer at Jarrow England built HMS Orlando and she was ready to sail in 1888, having taken 3 years to build.

HMS Orlando was a Royal Navy armoured cruiser

HMS Orlando’s first duty was in 1890 to the Australian station. It left there in 1899 moving on to China, where those on board saw military action in the Boxer Rebellion.

In 1901 HMS Orlando returned to Britain where she was reduced to subsidiary duties. In 1902 HMS Orlando was placed in reserve and was finally sold on 11th July 1905.

  • Length 300 foot, Beam: 56 foot, Draught: 22 foot 6 inches.
  • Armament: two 22 ton guns, ten 6-pound guns and ten 3-pound quick-firers

Petralia Sottana, Sicily – Contributor List – Francesco Orlando

The document to the left is a list of 226 names of the Petralia Sottana area. All were contributors to a benefit provided for individuals crippled or orphaned by the War.

The document gives donations in both US dollar amounts and Lire, which indicates that some contributions were received from the United States, perhaps sent to family living in Petralia Sottana to be donated.

Obituary – Joyce "Bibs" Orlando (July 9, 1927 – April 18, 2015)

Joyce Bibs OrlandoJoyce “Bibs” Orlando age 87, passed away peacefully with her family by her side at Bay Area Medical Center in Marinette.

She was born July 9, 1927 in Racine, WI Joyce Jensen married Joseph K. Orlando December 21, 1959 in Marinette. The couple owned and operate Newton Lake Inn from 1959 until 1967 and they also farmed in the Town of Stephenson.

She loved spending time with her family and friends. Joyce enjoyed gardening , cooking and the outdoors. Surviving are her husband Joseph, one daughter Ellen and many nieces and nephews. Friends and relatives may call at the Rhodes-Charapata Funeral Home in Crivitz Wednesday April 22 from 9a.m. until time of Funeral at 11 a.m. Rev. Lin Wittmann officiating and burial in Forest Home Cemetery in Athelstane.

Obituary – Cettina Vanda (Orlando) Monteleone

Cettina Vanda (Orlando) V. Monteleone of Severna Park, MD (formerly of Wilmington, DE), passed away peacefully on February 21, 2015, at the Baltimore-Washington Hospital in Glen Burnie, MD. She was 86 years old.Vanda was born in Taranto, Italy, to the late Cosimo Orlando and Giovanna (Mosca) Orlando. In 1957 she married her long-time love, Italo Monteleone, M.D., after an eight-year courtship. The two immigrated to the United States later that year and became proud U.S. citizens in 1963.

Vanda was a very religious, loyal, trusting, and smart woman. She graduated from l’Istituto Professionale Maria Pia in Taranto where she studied Home Economics. She adored her family. Her husband Italo and her two daughters Elvira (Elva) and Giovanna (Joanne) were the center of her life and she would do anything for them. She dearly loved all her friends and was always there for them. Vanda loved children and volunteered at the children’s ward at the Wilmington Memorial Hospital, now Christiana Care. She was an active member of St. Anthony of Padua Church and often did volunteer work for the church and the school. She served as lunch mother twice a week at Padua Academy.
She travelled the world with her husband and family. She regularly returned to Italy to visit family and, when time permitted, stayed for a few months. She was a gourmet cook and loved to entertain. She adored all kinds of music and especially enjoyed listening to country music, Rod Stewart, and Il Volo. Her hobbies included good literature, going to the movies, watching award shows, and doing crossword puzzles in Italian and English.

Vanda was preceded in death by her beloved husband Italo, her brother Morgan, her brother-in-law Armando, and sister-in-law Geni. She is survived by two daughters, Elvira Caruso and Joanne Donnelly; her sons-in-law, Dominic Caruso and Rick Donnelly; three granddaughters, Elyse Donnelly, Erica Donnelly, and Sarah Clark; two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Evelyn; her sister Francesca Gesualdi and sister-in-law Claudia Orlando from Taranto; three brothers-in-law, Vincenzo (wife Giusi) from Genova, and Mario (wife Ave) and Adolfo (wife Marisa) from Taranto; and many cousins, nephews, nieces, and friends.

Visitation will be held at the CHARLES P. ARCARO FUNERAL HOME, 2309 Lancaster Ave in Wilmington, on Wednesday evening, February 25, from 6-8pm. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 9th and DuPont Sts in Wilmington, on Thursday morning, February 26 at 11am. Entombment will follow in Cathedral Cemetery, 2400 Lancaster Avenue.

Obituary – Leonard Orlando (August 25, 1915 – January 14, 2013)

Leonard Orlando, 97, a lifelong Crivitz resident passed away on Monday , January 14, 2013.

Leonard OrlandoBorn in the Athlestane area on August 25, 1915 to Antone and Mary (Porfilio) Orlando, he was a cattle dealer and farmer his entire life, retiring in 2011 when he sold the last of his cattle. On June 18, 1949 he married the former Myra Frost of Mountain, WI and together they celebrated 63 years of marriage. Besides his wife, Myra, he is survived by daughters Jean (Lee) Edges of Green Bay and Joan (Tweet) Netzel of Crivitz and a son, Leonard K. (Tony) (Dianne) of Green Bay; grandchildren Rhonda (William) Uelmen of Bonduel, Brad (Heidi) Netzel of Germantown, and Dan and Kristin Orlando of Green Bay; great-grandchildren Cooper and Griffin Uelmen and Jack, Nate and Will Netzel. He is further survived by four brothers; John (Marie), Carl (Pat), Ralph (Pat), and Paul (Virginia) Orlando; two sisters; Stella Frontczak and Annie Katers and sister-in-laws, Vi Orlando and Lil Orlando.

Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends. He was preceded in death by two brothers; Arthur and Louis Orlando and two sisters; Helen Alpern and Josephine Orlando; a son-in-law, Ron Netzel; brothers-in-law, Al Frontczak, Orville Katers and Walt Alpern; a sister-in-law Sharon Orlando and a nephew, John (Jake) Orlando. Family and friends may call at the Rhodes- Charapata Funeral Home in Crivitz from 9:00 AM until the time of service at 12:00 noon on January 18, 2013 with Pastor Lina Wittman officiating. Interment will be in the Forest Home Cemetery in Crivitz. The family would like to thank the staff at Manor Care West and Unity Hospice for the care provided to Leonard.

Funeral Service Information from Bowra & O’Dea

The Funeral Mass for Mr Salvatore Orlando of Yokine will be celebrated in St Kieran’s Catholic Church, Cnr Cape and Waterloo Streets, Osborne Park commencing at 10:15am on FRIDAY (31/07/2015). The cortege will leave the church at the conclusion of the Mass and arrive at the main entrance of KARRAKATTA Cemetery, Railway Road, Karrakatta at 12 noon for a Burial Service. Vigil Prayers and Rosary will be recited in St Kieran’s Church, Osborne Park at 7pm on THURSDAY (30.07.2015).
